“Parshan? Zhivana? Where are you at on this?” Hajjar leaned in the doorway to his office, a mug in one hand.
Par shoved wet hair out of his face and shook his head. “Not much so far. We know the victim came up with ten suns to pay off his mother’s poppy dealer. We got stonewalled by the guards at the Treasury. Widow wasn’t home, so we wasted that drive for nothing.”
“Basically nothing adds up,” Zhivana added. “The widow is hiding something, the boss was agitated by the idea that Akil might have had something in the Treasury vault, and we have no idea how an apprentice with his means came up with almost three months wages to pay a debt that wasn’t even his, or why someone would set up a meeting, stab him a bunch of times, and then shove a coin down his throat.”
“No witnesses?” The lieutenant motioned at their case board with his mug. The office was empty and it looked as though everyone else had already gone home for the night.
“Only that thug that attacked us, and we don’t know how that’s related.”
“I wish we could find him,” Zhivana added. “I have a feeling he’d have a hell of a story to tell us.”
“Maybe there’s some kind of inheritance, though no one mentioned any other family. We need to find Jala and talk to her again. Maybe talk to Batros more, shake him up a little,” Par said. “He seemed fake to me.”
“I agree,” Zhivana said, flipping through her notes. Par resisted rolling his eyes at her enthusiasm. He needed to play nice in front of Hajjar, who was watching him like a concerned parent.
“Good. See what comes up with the boss and go re-interview the mother tomorrow. What about this new place the widow said they were moving to?” Hajjar asked.
“I’ll check records on that. If they bought a new place, the city would have the information somewhere.” Zhivana shrugged.
“If it isn’t lost in paper-shuffle hell,” Par muttered.
“Go home,” Hajjar said. “You two can hit records tomorrow and do more digging on Gerges and his widow.”
“I’ll drop by Records on my way home; see if I can’t get a request in early. We’ll need a dispatch for the Treasury vault, but that’ll wait until courts open tomorrow.” Par shrugged his damp jacket back on.
“I’ve got to write up that report on the guy who went out the window,” Zhivana said. “Night, Par.”
“Night.” He nodded to Hajjar, feeling the Lieutenant’s gaze on his back all the way out of the building. There was more he wanted from Records. Though the fight that day in the apartment had happened fast, Par could have sworn the first arrow had hit the kirgani. The bloody tear in her sleeve backed him up on that. He clenched his hands as he crossed the square and ducked into the Records hall.
He didn’t know how she’d healed, if she had. Magic, other than that given by the gods to the priests, was forbidden.
